Minutes after arriving to our hotel, we went exploring nearby and found the Vatican. Little did we realize Pope Francis was out giving his Papal Blessing. We couldn’t have planned it out more perfectly, and what an incredible way to start our trip. If you are trying to plan a visit to see the Pope click here.

The next day was our official time slot to visit the Vatican and St. Peter’s Basilica. My in-laws had just visited Rome and used a tour guide that they graciously gifted to us for a day on our trip. Patricia was wonderful and in one day guided us through the Vatican, St Peter’s Basilica, Roman Forum, and the Colosseum. If you are not using a tour guide, I would highly recommend splitting up into at least 2 days to see it all. I would also get to the Vatican early in the morning to line up for your tickets.

A highlight was seeing the Sistine Chapel with my own two eyes. Unfortunately, you are not allowed to take any pictures inside. Having a tour guide not only let us skip lines, but she explained everything that we were seeing.
