We drove from Boston to Maine and stopped in Portsmouth, New Hampshire on the way up the coast – about an hour from downtown Boston. Our first stop on the GPS was to take us to the Portsmouth Lighthouse.
This was my least favorite of the 2 lighthouses we saw, but it is located on a historic fort and worth a stop to stretch your legs. I also enjoyed winding through the neighborhoods to get there.
Downtown Portsmouth is full of historic buildings and boutique shops. There is a parking garage in case you can’t find any good street parking. We stopped to sample a flight of beer at the Portsmouth Brewery and ate lunch at Popovers on the Square.
On the way back to Boston, we stopped at Cape Neddick Lighthouse in York, Maine. If you only have time to see one lighthouse, make it this.
